GOWERTONIAN  SOCIETY ANNUAL DINNER 2008

The annual dinner was held at The North Gower Hotel on Saturday  13th September. We had 127 Gowertonians in attendance to listen to Gilbert John, BBC Roving Reporter and former pupil.
Gilbert very cleverly made his delivery both amusing and informative with references to interviews he had conducted with many famous names.

Traditional toasts were made to The Queen, The Society and The School by Catherine Thomas, Marjorie Stubbings and Dr Alun Jones respectively. The response to the toast to the school was made by Matthew Wedlake and Hannah Senior [Head Prefects]

Denys Jenkins received the Gowertonian Award for Outstanding Service to the Community for his amazing contribution to charitable causes in the area.

Tony Small was also nominated for the award for his outstanding devotion to the development of music in the village of Penclawdd but, unfortunately, was not present to receive it on this occasion.

Profits from every dinner are used to help the school in various ways. Further details will appear in the Newsletter which will be on this website in May/June 2009.

As usual the event was held at The North Gower Hotel,Llanrhidian.

The event was well attended again with 128 former pupils dining in The Gower Room.

The highlight of the evening was the address by the Guest Speaker Professor Peter Stead the eminent historian, political pundit, writer, broadcaster and former pupil of the Boys' Grammar.

Peter very cleverly spoke about his experieces in education at home and abroad and emphasised his gratitude to those who taught him at Gowerton particularly Mr Moir Gilchrist who was also a guest at the dinner.

Date: 23rd Sept 2006

Gowertonian Society Annual Dinner

The Annual Dinner took place on Saturday 23rd September at The North Gower Hotel.
The event was introduced by Dr Alun Jones, master of ceremonies for the evening.
There was a minute's silence in memory of Eileen Griffihs a long standing member of the committee, who died recently aged 92.
Mrs Ann Borthwick, President of the Society said the Grace.
The Loyal Toast was proposed by Miss Chloe Guy.
Mrs Rona Davies proposed the toast to the Society.
Mr Owen Hughes proposed the toast to the School.

Senior Students

Two senior students from the present school responded to Mr Hughes by informing the gathered former students of developments and events which had taken place in the school over the last academic year.Topics such as examination results, sporting achievement, cultural items, the sporting tour to Australia, the retirement of Mr Paul Green, the building of a new science block and the incoming headmaster Mr Peter Harrison were mentioned so interestingly by Rebecca Northey and Rhys Morris, head girl and boy respectively.

Edwina Hart AM
The guest speaker for the evening, Mrs Edwina Hart was introduced humorously by Dr Jones.

Mrs Hart gave a most interesting talk which apart from giving Dr Jones as good as he got, gave everyone an insight into the world of politics and her own views on how politicians should represent their constituents. A very impressive speech from a very sincere woman.

To conclude the evening the President presented Mr Owen Hughes with an engraved plate to recognise his 50 years of outstanding service to the society.

Presentation of Plate to Mr Owen Hughes by Mrs Anne Borthwick

The Chairman , Robert Evans thanked table organisers for their continued support, Mrs Marjorie Stubbings for her efforts in preparation for the dinner on site, Dr Jones for controlling the events of the evening, and finally reminding everyone that next years dinner would be on Saturday 22nd of Sept 2007. Further details of next years event would appear on the society's website in due course.
